Understanding a cash flow statement is crucial to keeping tabs on your company's financial well-being. A cash flow statement is an annual report that documents the financial status of the company with accurate and relevant numbers. Plenty of people take an interest in a company's cash flow statement, such as the financial division, lenders, creditors, current and potential investors, employees and the company owners. Not only do these people need to know what's in a cash flow statement, but they also need to know how to read it.

    Topics Covered:

    • Investments:  This part of the cash flow statement includes buying and selling of any long-term assets.  These could include property, machinery, capital expenditures or stock market earnings.  This will generally show up on the cash flow statement as negative cash.
    • Day-To-Day Operations:  This section of a cash flow statement should reveal the accounts receivable and accounts payable.  It can alert the business owner on several aspects of the financial operations, such as whether the collections department is suffering or when inventory is not moving.  Ideally, operations should show up on the cash flow statement as positive or excess cash.
    • Finance Costs:  Every business has loans and financing to account for, and this section lists the repayment costs of those loans.  It can also include dividends paid and any tax associated with dividends.  This will always show up as negative cash for the company.

Whether you are a business owner or thinking of buying an existing business, a cash flow statement is like a checkup for a company.  Knowing where the money comes from, where it's going and the balance between the two can help you predict if a company will survive.

    Is Crowd funding for you?

With Attorney Paul Crème of Hamblett & Kerrigan, PA.

Crowd Funding sites like Kickstarter offer innovative ways to raise funds for business projects.  You set a funding goal and deadline. All-or-nothing funding might seem scary, but it’s been an effective alternative to traditional investing.

    Topics Covered:

    • Is crowdfunding right for your project or business idea?
    • What are the risks?
    • What different types of crowdfunding options are available?
    • Update of the rules governing crowfunding
    • State law issues
